Safe Cribs

Make sure your crib meets Consumer Product Safety Commission (http://www.consumer.gov/productsafety.htm) crib safety standards and has:

  • No missing or broken hardware (screws, brackets, etc).
  • Slats no more than 2 3/8 inches apart.
  • No corner posts over 1/16 inches high.
  • No cutout designs in the headboard or foot board.
  • A firm tight-fitting mattress.

For mesh-sided cribs and playpens, look for:

  • Mesh less than ¼ inch in size, smaller than the tiny buttons on a baby’s clothing.
  • Mesh with no tears, holes, or loose threads that a baby could get tangled in.
  • Mesh tightly attached to the top rail and base of crib.
  • Top rail cover with no tears or holes.
  • If staples are used, they are not missing, loose, or showing.

Sheets in cribs or beds can be dangerous to babies.
To prevent tragedies, make sure:

  • Crib sheets fit snugly on a crib mattress and overlap the mattress so they cannot be pulled easily on the corner of the sheet.
  • Never use an adult sheet on a crib mattress; it can loosen and entangle the baby.
  • All pillows, quilts, comforters, and sheepskins are removed from the crib.
